Global IT Outage Causes Mass Flight Cancellations
Thousands Stranded as Airlines Grounded
Around 4295 flights globally or 39% of all scheduled services have been cancelled so far.
A major IT outage is causing widespread disruption to air travel around the world, with thousands of passengers stranded and hundreds of flights cancelled.
All airlines operating in the UK have been affected, with more than 500 flights cancelled so far. Ryanair and Turkish Airlines have both issued travel advisories, warning passengers of potential delays and cancellations.
Globally, around 110,000 commercial flights were scheduled for today. As of 11:00 BST, 1,390 flights have been cancelled. More than 500 flights were cancelled by early afternoon, and hundreds more delayed, leaving passengers stranded at airports around the world.
The outage, which began early this morning, is affecting a wide range of businesses, including banks, airlines, train companies, telecommunications companies, and TV and radio stations.
Passengers are advised to check with their airline for the latest flight information. Those who are stranded abroad are advised to contact their embassy or consulate for assistance.
The cause of the outage is still being investigated, but it is believed to be related to a software update that was rolled out earlier this week.
